Twitter Announces @Anywhere Platform
During his SXSW keynote interview today, Twitter's Evan Williams announced the service's new @platform. While the keynote interview itself was rather forgettable (a large part of the audience left before it was over), the @platform will have wide-reaching consequences for Twitter and its ecosystem. This new platform will allow publishers to integrate Twitter deeper into their site and recreate the "open, engaging interactions" their readers expect from using Twitter "without sending them to T... Thoughts on Community Management
Chris Myles, an active Buzz user, albeit a critical one, has a buzz post out suggesting that Google Buzz needs a “Customer Advocate,” to do “community management” for Buzz. I suspect that as Buzz grows over time, that community management types might begin being added to the product team. Having been very involved in web communities over the course of the past seven years or so, I thought I’d post some of my own thoughts on this subject matter. So far to date, I think Google has been doing... Read more

Some Thoughts on Location Based Services Like Gowalla and FourSquare
I was recently on a panel at the South by South West interactive conference (SXS) where we discussed multiple applications of the real-time Web and the things that might prevent us from seeing its true potential. I’ve found it interesting that the key take away from the panel is that privacy issues will be one of the biggest problems we will face as we move forward. You can see this perspective in CNN’s coverage of the panel in the story Privacy concerns hinder 'real-time Web' creation, dev... Read more

Introduction to OAuth Basic
OAuth allows you to share your private resources (photos, videos, contact list, bank accounts) stored on one site with another site without having to hand out your username and password. Giving your user name or password to a social media site is like giving them the rights to access your account. Common Terms These are some of the common terms that we should know when dealing with OAuth: Service Provider – the Service Provider controls all aspects of the OAuth implementation. The Service ... die abwesenheit von listen / filtern bei google buzz hat mich ziemlich genervt, aber man kann sie eh emulieren: zunächst muss man sich eine suchanfrage bauen, die via dem from:username suchoperator alle leute erfasst und via OR verknüpft. zb. eine liste für die hackr.work members: from:"matthias pfefferle" OR from:"pierro marie" OR from:"dominik schwind" OR from:"martin lindner" OR from:"saurier duval" wenn man will kann man das dann noch über quellen mit dem source:sourcename sucho... Is Privacy on the Social Web a Technical Problem?
How to deal with user privacy on social networks as they grow, mature and become more sophisticated has been a frequent topic of conversation at this year’s SXSW — and not just in researcher Danah Boyd’s keynote address that argued aggregating public information can be a privacy breach, and slammed Google and Facebook for their missteps with users’ expectations. Is privacy just a technical problem? That’s what Google engineer Brett Slatkin, co-creator of the PubSubHubbub real-time syndicatio... Read more

Why Google Releases New Apps: They're Desperate for Content
It seems like in the past few months Google has relentlessly released new applications, some of which perhaps could have used some more baking in the oven before they were unleashed on the general public. To some it's becoming a tiresome exercise simply to try to keep up with everything that Google is doing week in and week out. But there is a method to the madness, and it has a lot more to do with Google's bottom line than you may think. We all know that the way the search engine giant make... Read more

Users vs. Companies: Conflicts over the Real-Time Web?
If 2009 was the year of real-time Web, with practically every major service finding ways to bring content to its users instantly, 2010 is about optimizing the new real-time world, expanding interoperability between sites, finding more ways for users' content to be discovered, and taking the potential of real-time out of the status world and into the real world. Today, at the South by Southwest Interactive event in Austin, Texas, one panel asked if we were making serious progress in this visio... Read more

Activity Streams Aim to Be DNA of the Future Web
When the well-respected open source advocate Chris Messina announced he was joining Google in January, many folks were concerned that his being absorbed in to the big company Borg would mean a cessation or redirection of some of his projects targeting the next generation Web, possibly in exchange of proprietary efforts to promote the company's products. Today, at the South by Southwest Interactive event in Austin, Texas, he spoke on how he and others in the community, both at Google and outsi... Read more

Truncated RSS Is A Bad Business Decision
A few years back, I wrote about why we had found full text RSS feeds to be much more powerful and useful than truncated RSS feeds. The reason that many sites push truncated feeds is the belief that it will force people to click through, and the ads on the webpage are worth a lot more than the ads found in RSS feeds. But it's a short-sighted view. Because what it's really doing is trying to push readers to do something that they don't want to do. Many of them use RSS readers because it's a... Read more

Was fragen Menschen ihr soziales Netzwerk?
Bild von Flickr Sprechen Menschen im Internet über Finanzen? In der Ficoba Community tun sie dies definitiv. Aber wie sieht es in Communites aus, die sich nicht explizit mit Geld & Co beschäftigen? IT failure: ‘Evil is the cure for incompetence’
I got a laugh from this Dilbert cartoon: Dilbert has a harsh view of the world that also contains some truth. I almost laugh when people tell me that human or cultural factors play no role in IT failures. Well, maybe I want to laugh, but actually, those views make cry. In general, technology from reputable vendors does work as advertised. Yes, the software may contain complexity, but enterprise software reflects real world business processes that are… well, you know, complic... Read more

Twitter Location? Thanks, But No Thanks
Twitter announced yesterday that it would finally be adding location support and, while they certainly appear to be doing it right, we have to wonder about the new feature. We already have Gowalla, Foursquare, MyTown, BrightKite and more - do we really need Twitter too? Sponsor First, we have to say that we're quite happy with the opt-in, "back out at any momen...
